REOPENED! HWY 178 THROUGH KERN CANYON

Highway 178 has reopened with one-way traffic control

If you are able to reroute your travel through one of the options below to reduce traffic in the Canyon, it would be greatly appreciated!

If you are traveling to Camp Kernville in an RV or pulling a trailer,
please select one of the following preferred routes...


Traveling from Bakersfield - Central Coast - Central Valley

Although this is the longest route, it is the best suited for high profile rigs (Class A Motorhomes & 5W) as well as trucks pulling trailers.

Take Hwy 58 towards Tehachapi/California City, North on Hwy 14, West on Hwy 178 (over Walker Pass), and North on Hwy 155 to Kernville.

Traveling from Bakersfield - Central Coast - Central Valley


Although this is not the preferred route, it will still accommodate RVs and vehicles pulling trailers.  Enjoy the scenery as you drive.

Take Hwy 58 East to Bealville Rd (signs for Caliente), travel through Twin Oaks/Havilah/Lake Isabella, and North on Hwy 155 to Kernville.

Best route for all vehicle types. Since Sierra Way is closed, you will need to drive through Lake Isabella and turn north towards Kernville.

If you are traveling to Camp Kernville by vehicle from Bakersfield - Central Coast - Central Valley, you may travel by way of the Lion's Trail. This route is NOT recommended for high profile vehicles or vehicles towing a trailer.
*This mountain road has many winding curves so make sure you allow for extra drive time to accommodate.
